José Bujalance C. | The past constructed from the left has been eclipsed by the narrative of liberalism, which fostered a curious opposition between the free world (apolitical and de-ideologized) and fascism (politicized, ideologized and archaic). This border no longer marks its dividing line based on the alternative that emancipatory projects can provide, but rather based on free market democracy. And the great triumph of this narrative, typical of a liberal ethos metamorphosed into neoliberalism, has consisted in creating an equivalence between the left and fascism, understood as two radicalized extremes that has allowed it to identify the left with nationalism and totalitarianism, establishing the idea that the left could also become fascist. Today we find ourselves trapped within a narrative where the return of fascism is associated with everything that is not identified with the free market. Meanwhile, we are unable to glimpse the new mutation that accelerated with the pandemic: a form of fascism engendered in the bowels of the supposedly free world.
Criticism of economic liberalism Nowadays, it becomes urgent to review some of the traps in which this liberal narrative locked us and that this pandemic has helped to deactivate. The first thing we could notice is that the organization of the people around leadership figures, the construction of collective identities or the presence of a strong State are not necessarily Costa Rica WhatsApp Number expressions of fascism and may even oppose it. Reducing freedom to non-interference impoverishes the debate, intensifies inequalities and threatens us with the return of fascism. People are not free when nothing or no one interferes with us, but we become free when we are not tied to bonds of dependence and submission. Perhaps the challenge is to enrich the meaning of the word freedom, to understand that not all intervention is arbitrary and that we need many types of interference to learn to emancipate ourselves from hatred, privilege and structural inequality. Just as neoliberal hegemony got rid of the principle of equality to organize a democratic form based on a narrow idea of freedom, today the oligarchy is promoting an unprecedented mutation, namely: a world order that gets rid of the principle of democracy in the name of a new form of freedom.
In the face of ultraliberalism, solidarity proposals Beneath the apparent chaos, a new form of authoritarianism is brewing. Many liberals have joined the ranks of an extreme right that guarantees spectacle. Some call themselves "libertarians" but they are totalitarians who hate "sociocommunism", oppose feminism, the LGTBI community and inclusive language, with a punitive and heavy-handed discourse on "security", while repeating the mantra that the minority who produces supports the rest with their taxes (they hate Maynard Keynes). What they see threatened is the position of privilege that the fascist articulation promised, understood as a form of superiority of men over women, of whites over other races, of the upper classes over the middle and popular classes, and of these over the migrants. For this reason, xenophobic, elitist, gender discrimination or anti-progressive discourses are structured under the same fantasy: the other functions as that presence that I need to deny and affirm at the same time, since it is their exclusion that would guarantee my identity as a place. of relative privilege in the world.
