The pandemic was spreading like wildfire; they called it “Mako Fever”. A highly concentrated haze of gasified Mako had blanketed all of Midgar, subjecting those within to extract a rapid form of Mako poisoning. This Mako Fever was deathly debilitating and left those caught up in the haze gasping for more and more every second, bringing them closer to their death. The group who had committed such a devastating act was still completely unknown to all researching the sudden appearance of the haze, but Reeve Tuesti was hot on the trail of a terrorist organization locally called the “Green Death” for their experimentation with raw Mako. Reports had come in on Green Death charting them as a small gang who regularly visited a pub in the ghetto of Midgar called The Tonberry Haunt and rented out an upstairs room. Apparently the owner of the pub, a man who wished to remain anonymous for fear of backlash, recalled a sickeningly sweet aroma wafting down from upstairs soon after the gang rented out the upstairs room, and never had a chance to chew the gang out for stinking up his pub; the pub owner claims that the gang would leave and enter the pub inconspicuously, either while he was in the restroom or bring out bottles of alcohol from a back storage room. This man, along with just a dozen or so others, evacuated town before the haze set it and are now confined to our research lab for traces of the Mako haze. From somewhere on the table behind Reeve and his massive control panel, the feline figure lazily uncurled out of his sleeping position, stretching with a satisfactory sigh. For a few moments, Cait Sith rolled around playfully on the table before being rudely brought back to the real world by Reeve impatiently clearing his throat.
As far as Reeve could tell, this Green Death organization was the most reliable cause of the problem he had heard all day, and so he had put on himself the task of finding out as much information about this gang as he could. So far, Reeve discovered that a local rumor told of Green Death, early on in their experimentation of Mako, had adapted to all the effects of Mako in its gas state. This made it extremely easy for the gang to be hiding out in the middle of the haze, where they could not be found and could plan their next move. For the purpose of the investigation, Reeve decided to send out Cait Sith into the fray to discover the whereabouts of this supposed Green Death. ”All right Cait Sith, let’s head on out.”
”Right away boss!” Cait Sith exclaimed, hopping down from the table and giving Reeve a short salute before marching out the door in a mocking way. Sighing, Reeve typed in a few commands and a screen showing a view through Cait Sith’s eyes appeared on the hologram-of-a-monitor on the wall. Outside in the hallway, Cait Sith suddenly stiffened up after having been taken over by Reeve via his control panel, eyes widening to give a better view of his surroundings. I hate when you do that! Cait Sith thought agitatedly, communicating through Reeve mentally. Reeve answered back with a small chuckle and prompted Cait Sith to proceed forward down the hallway. After leaving the laboratory, a temporary headquarters for Reeve’s work during this investigation, Cait Sith skipped down casually into Midgar, entering the border of haze controlled by a beacon that siphoned some of the Mako back into the Lifestream. Though it was not very efficient, the beacon assisted in keeping the haze in Midgar and did not allow it to spread further. A thought of horror crossed Reeve’s mind as he imagined the haze slowly taking over all of The World, all because of a petty gang and their irresponsible experiments. It reminded him greatly of Shinra and, like Shinra, made him sick with disgust.
Cait Sith, feeling this emotions radiating from Reeve’s mental connection, inherited his hatred for Shinra. In fact, Cait Sith’s interactions with Shinra had not been too pleasant anyways, so this was just wood to a fire, even if that version of Cait Sith had been replaced and improved many times since then. The current version of Cait Sith had been recreated with all the information and experiences past Cait Siths had received along with some he had contributed himself; he almost felt a sense of pride at being able to honor his line of robot cats.
Trudging on through the thick haze proved to be more difficult than Reeve had planned, though such a conflict was easily fixable. After typing in a few commands from his control panel back in the building directly behind Cait Sith, the feline-robo’s eyes illuminated like flashlights, cutting through the dark with two rays of light. Instantly, Cait Sith’s vision cleared up and allowed him to see almost five yards ahead of him. Off in the distance, Reeve saw a pillar of haze billowing out of what looked to be a fireplace. Compared to the pillar of haze, the atmosphere was very thin, though sight-obstructing. A sign on the building that could just barely be read through all this fog said: “The Tonberry Haunt”. This must be the place… Reeve thought, passing on the message to Cait Sith. ”Roger!” the cat spoke loudly, his thick Scottish accent showing through with just this single word. And with that, Cait Sith was off, bounding towards the pub on all fours. Though Reeve was a bit aggravated by not having a clear view through Cait Sith’s eyes, what with all this bouncing and bounding, he knew it was necessary to infiltrate the pub silently and stealthily, and the lithe bounding of a cat stalking its prey gave Reeve the stealth he needed.
After a few moments, Cait Sith came to a stop in front of what seemed to be a window looking in on the second floor of the pub; the entire room was covered in the green haze and four indistinct bodies were seen collapsed in front of the fireplace. Apparently the Mako even in this amount had been too much for the Green Death. Still, there was a chance that these people were not the Green Death and that all the rumors had been untrue, as unlikely as that sounded. Enter the room.” Reeve commanded tersely, and Cait Sith obliged by promptly smashing it. Cait Sith! No destruction of city property! Reeve reprimanded the cat and ended the scolding with a sigh, knowing that what had been done had probably needed to be done. It had just been an irritatingly long day for Reeve to be called in on an off-duty day. ”Science is never off-duty!” rang the mocking voice of a past instructor, causing Reeve to slump over on the table massaging his temples, angry at how these people seriously overworked him.
Cait Sith, idly sitting in the upstairs room of the pub, awaited Reeve’s next commands. Find some way to stop the source of the haze… Reeve thought tiredly, ready for this day to be over. Turning his vision over to the fireplace, a small smile broke across the cat’s face. ”Ah-hah!” he muttered aloud, prancing over to the fire and removing a vial of vibrant Mako from over a fire. Sniffing at the solution, Cait Sith promptly gave a disgusted “Nyeh!” and held it far from his face as he left out of the window back towards the lab. Almost immediately, the haze began to clear up. Reeve was surprised that such a small amount of Mako had caused such devastating effects, but after further research he learned that the vial of green liquid was actually highly concentrated, “raw” Mako that reacted wildly with oxygen to create a poisonous haze. Because of its highly reactive state, the particles of the gas multiplied and thus could create a roomful of gas with just a teaspoon of the Mako extract and heat. This sample was placed in a freezing room for further tests. The only goal on the mind of the scientists at the laboratory were that of using the Mako extract as a weapon; they could create more and design some type of firearm that could heat up the extract and shoot off pellets of poisonous gas that would instantly infect anyone near it.
The only goals on Reeve’s mind were the possibilities that the extract could pose a help to The World, but the scientists all laughed at him as if he had just told an extremely humorous joke. Laughing along with the idiots, letting them live in their ignorant world of victory by destruction, Reeve sighed on the inside, growing just a little older. Lucky for me I have eternal youth! chimed in Cait Sith cheerily.[/blockquote]
